Water autonomy for a rural estate: wells, springs and treatment

A domaine is autonomous in water when two independent sources can each serve the house alone, and the treatment is kept on the property.
One source is a supply. Two independent sources are autonomy. In practice that usually means a borehole and stored rainwater, each sized to carry the household on its own for a full summer.
Yield is measured across a season rather than on the day of the visit, and the water is analysed for hardness, nitrates and bacteriology before filtration is specified.
Waste water is treated by planted filters on the estate: a series of reed beds that return clean water to the land, ask little maintenance, and make no sound.
